Simona Dossi is a young engineer from Italy, who recently successfully completed an exchange in Germany with Theresa Schubert.

Simona has graduated in chemical engineering from the University of Edinburgh in July 2018. After graduating, she worked as energy engineer intern in Spain and as water quality monitoring specialist in Italy, for a year.

She learned about the programme from a friend of her had a positive experience in Amsterdam. "After graduating and working for a couple of years, I was excited for the opportunity of a new experience abroad especially in an international city like Berlin” said Simona.

Simona’s business idea is to offer environmental purifying products to monitor and purify specific water sources. Yet, before jumping into her entrepreneurial journey, she wanted to develop her knowledge in further education and research experience while refining her business plan. This the reason why Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs came as the write solution for her.

Theresa Schubert is a media and bio artist as well as entrepreneur for 14 years. Her artistic work involves various interdisciplinary themes including microbiology, computer science video and photography. Theresa’s work also includes writing political position regarding environmental protection; for example, her latest performance art piece, mEat me is about the ethical reflection of factory farming, and meat production.

During four-months, the two women have enthusiastically collaborated together on various artistic projects, and one of them is a investigating project on fungi, called ‘Mind the Fungi’ that Simone Dossi had actually already started working on before the exchange.

This residency is a collaborative project with Art Laboratory Berlin and the Microbiology Department of TU Berlin. Simona’s work within Theresa’s project was helping with the planning set up monitoring and presentation of the second and most extensive laboratory and artistic experiment project conducted within the TU Berlin laboratory called ‘The Box Mycellium x Sound.’

Thanks to this exchange, Simona could create and perform laboratory methodologies measurements, photo and video editing website uploads and creating visual presentations. She also had the opportunity to organise and promote the annual Open Studio event. Simona helped with various grant proposals, and funding application, which are invaluable skills to gather support for future technological entrepreneurial pursuits.

The exchange of experience with an experienced business leader helped Simona not only develop her entrepreneurial skills but also photography and video editing, communication and digital marketing and website creation skills. Learning these skills was an invaluable contribution to Simona’s future entrepreneurial work. An experience in a completely new industry, the independent visual and performance artists, brought her new knowledge and ideas.
